Septic Installation - Know your choices

There are three common septic installations performed in the north central Texas area:

• Conventional Drainfield
• Low Pressure Drainfield 
• Aerobic systems

The type of system that will be required is based on the site conditions of your property.  If your property has already been permitted for a particular type of system, like an aerobic, one usually cannot replace it with a conventional system.  Beware of installers who push a particular system, like an aerobic system, and don't discuss your options.

Conventional Systems

Contrary to many beliefs, conventional systems are still a viable alternative in many areas of north Texas:

• Can be used in clay/loam and sandy/loam soils
• Effluent is gravity fed to a drainfield
• Does not require monitoring contracts
• Cheaper to operate than an aerobic system
• No chlorine to buy, pumps to replace, etc etc
• Should not be installed in black gumbo soil

Low Pressure Drain-field System (LPD)

A viable alternative to an aerobic system!

• Suitable for most soil conditions, including clay
• Drainfield area needs to be fairly level
• Pump fed drainfield versus gravity fed drainfield
• Better than gravity fed drainfield
• No chlorine to buy
• No monitoring agreement required
• Slightly higher cost to install than an aerobic

Aerobic systems

A system for difficult soil or site conditions.

• Suitable for most all soil types in north Texas
• More expensive to maintain
• Requires an inspection agreement
• Requires the addition of chlorine or bleach
• More cost to operate over the life of system
• Pumps and aerators require periodic replacement
• Effluent is sprayed in yard thru sprinklers
• Can be smelly if not properly maintained
• Perpetual life, no failing drainfields
